The Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA) provides puppy referral as a convenience to puppy buyers to find out about breeders who are GRCA members and their litters. GRCA takes no responsibility whatsoever for any puppies/dogs that you may acquire through GRCA puppy referral. GRCA is not responsible for any breeder’s sale practices and sales contracts, nor will GRCA be involved in any manner in contract disputes between puppy buyers and breeders. Availability of puppies and conditions of sale are at the sole discretion of the individual breeder. Buyers are encouraged to search the grca.org web-site, for general information about obtaining a puppy, to take as much time as necessary to locate a reputable breeder from whom they feel comfortable purchasing a puppy, and to investigate breeders and their puppies thoroughly before committing to a purchase. You are not obligated to purchase a puppy from the breeders whose names you obtain from GRCA puppy referral.

There are a few very good Golden Retriever breeders here in Virginia but there are a whole lot of puppy mills too. The internet and social media are flooded with ads from people who exploit the golden retriever breed primarily for profit. While doing your research you will find a rapidly growing number of health concerns disregarded by irresponsible breeders (who might admit to them if they are even aware). Again, BE INFORMED.
Responsible Golden Retriever breeders will only breed pure bred Golden Retrievers from carefully selected sire's and dam's and never produce mixed breed "Frankendogs" such as Golden Doodles. In an attempt to minimize the influence of inheritable genetic disorders, responsible Golden Retriever breeders who are dedicated to improving the health of the breed also perform substantial research beyond the pedigrees of their sire's and dam's, limiting their breeding to quality bloodlines with relevant and verifiable health exam history and good temperaments. Responsible breeders also routinely screen the health of their own breeding stock for potential inheritable issues through a variety of health testing exams through OFA, OVC, BVA, Antech, PennHip, CERF, UC Davis, Embark, MSU, Board Certified Opthamologists & Cardiologists, Orthopaedic specialists and specialized research organizations that are committed to identifying genetic disorders that goldens are generally predisposed to.
The more Golden Retriever breeders we meet, the fewer we discover that have done their homework and go beyond testing the basics to breed a quality dog that exemplifies the breed standard. The more you do your own research, the more you will discover this. Again, BE INFORMED before you begin your search and do not fear asking me or any breeder anything that you may feel are uncomfortable questions. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.
The GRCA is a great resource of information with more useful articles about golden retrievers than any other website. The GRCA Puppy Referral page is a good starting place to locate the better golden breeders across the country described above who are more likely to help you find a great golden retriever, but, it is no guarantee. We strongly suggest doing your own research before making such an important decision and to read the GRCA's easy to understand "Before buying a puppy" information online using the GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB of AMERICA website. Good luck with your search!!
Briarwood Farm Golden Retrievers are raised in our home with daily individual attention. We dedicate a good deal of time to the welfare and development of each individual puppy from conception until the moment they leave with their new owner(s). Each puppy receives Early Neurological Stimulation from day 3-16 and from there we incorporate a limited amount of the training methods inspired by the Puppy Prodigies neo-natal early learning program. Briarwood Farm Goldens have ISO (universally compliant) microchips registered through AKC ReUnite, their first set of immunizations, transferrable vet health report, two year health guarantee against hip and elbow dysplasia, SAS, congenital eye defects and DNA collected for future genetic testing if the need arises. We also provide basic training information.
Again, Briarwood Goldens are raised in our home with our family, not in a kennel. We endeavor to produce healthy, sound and well socialized pups from the beginning. After reaching 5 weeks of age they are regularly socialized with children, introduced to retrieving toys, birds, and shallow water. Our pups frequently ride in cars and are accustomed to being in a crate at night or for short periods during the day. We strive to breed wonderful examples of the breed standard with excellent temperaments and generations of health tested ancestors.
A well-mannered and socialized golden is a joy to live with! Conversely, a spoiled rotten, untrained or poorly socialized dog of any breed can be a nightmare. Your pup’s future is in your hands and that is a big responsibility not to be taken lightly. We will provide you with tips to continue proper socialization and training. Additionally, we will be available to answer your questions for as long as your dog lives. Just as we put time and effort into each puppy, we also have expectations for your interactions and attention to continue with your dog when you take them home. We require new puppy owners to enroll in a puppy socialization class before the puppy reaches 16 weeks of age followed by obedience classes before 6 months of age to build the foundation for a more rewarding relationship that will last a lifetime.
You are invited to visit with our dogs, see them work and learn more about Briarwood Golden Retrievers! Thank you for reading all of this stuff :)
