BWF Breeding and Foaling Services
Breeding and foaling mares safely requires preparedness, know-how and patience in addition to around the clock monitoring. BWF is here to do the work for you.
Selective breeding along with proper mare and foal care is quite involved and desirable results are more likely with good planning as any experienced breeder knows. Ensure your confidence through a breeding consultation. You will be advised as to which stallions bred to your mare are likely to produce a preferable combination and most importantly, a foal that you can be proud of. After a stallion is selected we assist you with the processing of necessary paperwork such as stallion contracts and breeding certificates, etc. To facilitate breeding your mare with confidence, we determine when your mare is ready to be bred and breeding arrangements are made available for either artificial insemination or live cover. When AI is involved we manage semen shipment and assist our vet with insemination. Transportation is offered for the mare if required for live cover. After 15 days, post breeding ultrasound is performed. The mare is then monitored throughout her pregnancy. For mares already in foal, we assume the monitoring of your mare on our farm. A proper diet of good quality hay and feed is essential and we adjust it as appropriate, perform routine worming and necessary vaccinations. We use past history and udder developments along with PH and Calcium tests to help narrow down foaling times. Bedding requirements change as foaling time nears and straw is used at that time to prevent aspiration of wood shavings. We use video and audio monitors to watch the mares at this time.
After foaling, a vet check for the foal is performed the next day. The mare and foal will be monitored closely for the first week. Small paddocks designed specifically for newborn foals and recovering mares are adjacent to the stalls. Records of feeding, worming, halter breaking, etc. will be generated for the mare and foal under our care which will be provided when they return home. Your involvement is welcome throughout the entire experience. For your comfort, our purpose built foaling barn has an air conditioned mare watch observation room overlooking the stalls. Let us do the work so you can enjoy the experience.
While about 90% of the time foaling is uneventful, mare owners must accept the risks of breeding and foaling. BWF and our vet will do our very best to ensure an easy and successful foaling. All vet bills must be guaranteed and liability waivers must be authorized by mare owner(s). Proof of negative coggins along with a copy of vaccination records must be up to date prior to arrival. Zero exceptions! Mares will follow the BWF worming schedule upon arrival.
